I know this is pretty obvious to anyone who looks at this blog or follows technology. But even though IFTF has been tracking online video for years, it amazes me how fast online video is being adopted and how many different ways it is being used.
A good example is a site called "Pure Pwnage" . The videos and language on this site relate to the world of online first person shooter games. My teenage kids and their friends think these videos are very funny (I think they are awful). The site is getting quite a bit of traffic, and it appears the site owners are trying to turn this into a business.
Another example comes from Google Video. This video shows two chinese teens lip syncing to a Back Street Boys song. A friend forwarded this excellent video to me. The viral nature of the net means large audiences can be built if the content is good enough. Everyone has been looking for the next "star wars kid" - I think this has a shot.
Corporations are picking up on this. Converse has a site where they ask consumers to post 24 second videos on why they like Converse shoes. These videos are displayed on the site and some end up on TV. Take a look at: http://www.conversegallery.com/
Despite the large amount of video content on the web we are just at the beginning of this trend. As TV's become connected to the Internet, the use of online video will truly explode.
