At a meeting of corporate futurists at IFTF earlier this month the development of cheap global water purification methods was discussed. On that topic, an article in Gizmag that describes the Lifestraw, apparently a device (based on the picture) that allows a person to directly sip potentially polluted water. "...LifeStraw is a personal, low-cost water purification tool with a life time of 700 litres – approximately one year of water consumption for one person. Positive test results have been achieved on tap, turbid and saline water against common waterborne bacteria such as Salmonella, Shigella, Enterococcus and Staphylococcu...." This sounds a bit too good to be true, and I don't know the underlying technologies, but its certainly a development to look at more closely. Cost, efficacy, and the ability to use it in many environments will be key. Designer: Vestergaard Frandsen. More tech details.
