I was recently in St. James square in London and saw a plaque on a building paying tribute to Lady Lovelace as the first computer programmer. Since the only Lovelace I had ever heard of was not a programmer (at least I don't think she was a programmer), I was curious.
Future Wire has a brief article on the life and times of Lady Lovelace. She "programmed" Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine. Lady Lovelace's first name was Ada, and in 1980 the DOD named a programming language in her honor. Future Wire is also one of my favorite technology blogs.
