Years ago I used to subsist on the futuristic magazines of the day, Popular Science and Popular Mechanics. These painted a very rosy picture of the near future. They always showed examples of technology that could be available 'very soon'. A particularly exciting component of that future was transportation .. personal submarines, flying machines, ultrasonic flights. It has not all come to pass, and as I get stuck in a traffic jam, or pay increasing gas prices I wonder when these might come to pass, and what the unintended consequences will be. Now the UC Berkeley Bernice Layne Brown Gallery has put together an exhibit on this. If you can't make it in person, there is a well-done web site which covers the exhibition. Each section contains a bit of background, and even some reasons why each idea did not become common. There are just a few items which cover supply chain transportation, but its mostly about transporting people. Via Engaget.
